Andrew Warren-Nicholls, National Training Manager, SEEK Limited
SEEK Limited is considered Australia's most popular choice for advertisers searching for the right candidate, and job seekers looking for the right job. Andrew Warren-Nicholls, National Client Training Manager at SEEK Limited was searching for professional development. Andrew explains, Its challenging to find development that is unique and appropriate for trainers, based on a researched methodology. Andrew found his solution working with Michael Hann from Deep Blue Learning.
Michaels approach began by providing independent feedback and coaching after observing a training session, this enabled strategy to be developed to enhance the content and delivery of the training. Andrew found Michael energetic with dynamic ideas and the unique ability to quickly cut through the training content to conceptualise your outcomes. Subsequently Andrew participated in the program, Training with People in Mind to experience Deep Blue Learnings strategies first-hand. He was exposed to a range of tools and techniques, which are broadly based on the researched and published works of Dr Richard Allen. Andrew says this was a great opportunity to work with Michael to implement best practice, based on a methodology focused on how adults learn best.
A number of favourable outcomes were experienced at SEEK. The training program design evolved and became more targeted, using new techniques to increase participant interaction, engagement and overall experience. Feedback on the enhancements to training programs were very positive resulting in a more enjoyable and effective learning experience, says Andrew. Additionally, training sessions have a different flow, ultimately creating a more satisfying outcome as the trainer. An opportunity to support other areas of the SEEK business, saw Andrew re-design a program for the sales team. Andrew achieved his goal of professional development and benefited from the opportunity to work with Michael, in particularly his skilful suggestions on the most effective way to increase human interaction.

Gill McEwen, Pharmacy Field Business Manager, Johnson and Johnson Pacific
I have vivid memories of how I felt walking into a public program of Training with people in mind.
My senses were alive! The music playing in the background was upbeat, the posters splashed around the room were visually stimulating and whet my appetite ahead of a day's training. The room set up started to confirm my thoughts this was NOT going to be the usual classroom training delivery!
By morning tea I had set one firm goal in my mind this is the experience our sales and marketing teams should be living and breathing, especially during our national conference. The teams are responsible for delivering a number of training sessions and presentations over 2 days at national conference.
First for inspiration let the teams experience the sensation first hand. They ALL loved the principles the program delivered. The value of state changes to keep the energy in the room as well as the simplicity of delivering 1 direction at a time, especially important when facilitating large groups. They were all committed to change.
Next we needed to get it right! In consultation with Michael we set up coaching sessions with the brand teams prior to conference. Michael spent this time reviewing the session outlines with each team, fine tuning techniques, tweaking activities and creatively re-engineering some of the fantastic ideas already brought into the room.
Now for the delivery as an added confidence boost for the facilitators we brought Michael on board to work in the "background" with the brand teams. With both teams delivering totally different styles of workshops Michael was able to coach and support the shorter sessions "on the spot". The longer session running over two days had the extra benefit of reviewing the outcome of day 1 post the event and strengthening the delivery of the day two workshops under his guidance and direction.
The marketers loved the new format, the sales team were thrilled with the interactivity woven into the sessions and not having that "drained" feeling at the end of the day. Retention was also enhanced by using memory strategies at the end of the conference to recap the key messages and what a fun way to finish a fantastic conference.
The reception to this unique style of presenting was overwhelmingly positive. The program has now been rolled out to the field force who are using it for larger pharmacy assistant trainings with outstanding results AND retention.
